Airport Baggage Guide

Airport security can be scary, but don’t let it sour your vacations or traveling. With the right methods and tips, you can easily get through airport security with minimal hassle. One of the most important factors with airports is to find out their regulations. Every country and airline has a different set of regulations, so be sure to check them before packing your bags. These rules can either be found on a website or through contacting your travel agent for information.

Liquids are sensitive factors for most airports, so it is safer to avoid them altogether. A general rule is that you can only carry gels, aerosols, and liquids in a three ounce container in a clear bag. This may also include food, shampoo, toothpaste, and other common toiletry items. There are some exceptions to this rule if you have to carry medications, baby food, or other items for health purposes. However, you will still need to declare them with the security officer and perhaps show the official paperwork on why you need that item. Once you pass the baggage check area, feel free to purchase any of the toiletries or foods that are being offered by the airline.

Some airlines permit cigar cutters, lighters, safety razors, and nail cutters in your baggage. Any items larger than this such as hammers, saws, or pliers will need to put in checked bags. Sharp objects should always be thoroughly wrapped to ensure safety of both you and the aircraft personnel.

Lithium batteries are commonly used for laptops, PDAs, cell phones, and digital cameras. To prevent unintentional fires and short circuits from happening, airline usually have a limit for loosely packed batteries. For check on baggage, the batteries will need to be installed in their appropriate electronic device. Each person is limited to eight grams of carry-on lithium batteries, but they must be kept in a protective case or their original packaging.

Even if an item is not on the prohibited list, an airline official may deem it too dangerous to admit through the checkpoint. To keep this from happening, always place any questionable items in your check-in baggage. Your travel agent should also be aware of security requirements, so feel free to ask about any items in question. Many countries do not permit passengers to carry fresh food or produce without the proper credentials to keep crop and plant diseases from entering the country.
